Whether highly useful or just for fun, mobile apps have become an integral part of our daily lives. So much so that we've become completely dependent on them for everything from socializing to not getting lost. Although millions are available, statistics have shown we're all pretty much using the same ones. If you don't have one of these 20 most downloaded apps, where have you been?

1. Instagram

This social networking app has dominated the world since its inception in 2010. Instagram was downloaded a whopping 767 million times last year.

2. TikTok

TikTok surpassed Instagram as the most downloaded app between 2018 and 2022 but fell behind in 2023. It seems the world has a love-hate relationship with this one as in addition to being the second most downloaded, it’s also the most deleted.

3. Facebook

Although many young people now see it as an app their parents use, Facebook is still going strong worldwide. It was downloaded about 550 million times in 2023. Not too shabby!

4. WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a messaging and video-calling app that can be used to keep in touch worldwide. It’s used by over two billion people in 180 countries so it’s safe to say it’s pretty popular.

5. CapCut

CapCut is a video editing app that people use to effortlessly make professional-quality videos for their Instagrams or TikToks. It has over 200 million users worldwide.

6. Telegram

Another popular messaging app similar to WhatsApp, Telegram was downloaded over 400 million times last year. Created in Russia, it’s the most popular messaging app in parts of Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa.

7. Snapchat

You might remember Snapchat as a precursor to Instagram. It’s a social app used to share photos and videos with friends and although it’s no longer as popular as Instagram, it still has about 400 million active users globally.

8. Temu

You may be familiar with Temu thanks to its aggressive advertising campaigns across multiple platforms. It’s a Chinese discount shopping app established in 2022. With over 330 million downloads in 2023, it’s giving Amazon a run for its money.

9. Spotify

With over 600 million users, Spotify is the most popular audio streaming app. It has over 100 million songs and six million podcasts on offer, and rakes in over $14 billion yearly.

10. Audible

An outlier among the social media apps on this list is Audible. It was created by Amazon and represents over 60 percent of the audiobook market which is larger than Apple Books, Google, and Blinkist combined.

11. Google Translate

With the world becoming increasingly globalized and traveling being more accessible than ever, it’s not a huge surprise to see Google Translate on this list. The app which has about 500 million daily users helps people who don’t share a language communicate.

Where would us directionally challenged people be without Google Maps? This app has helped its over 1 billion monthly users worldwide find their way time and time again.

The new kid on the block, ChatGPT has been all the rage since it was launched in 2022, and for good reason. It’s a highly advanced AI chatbot with 200 million weekly users that’s making huge strides in the world of large language models.

Another sign of our globalized world, Duolingo is a popular language learning app. Its accessible design has made it the most popular language-learning app in the world with over 500 million users.

15. YouTube

YouTube was launched way back in 2005 as a platform for amateur videos but has since grown into one of the most used apps offering everything from music to full-length movies. More than a third of the world’s population access YouTube each month and around 65 percent of those users access from the mobile app.

First, it killed the video stores, now it’s dominating the app store. Netflix has seen over 14 million app downloads this July alone.

It hit the dating app scene in 2012 as a more casual alternative targeted towards young people and has pretty much dominated the market ever since. It has about 75 million monthly users globally.

Monopoly is no longer reserved for family hangouts, it’s now a single-player mobile game. It had the most successful mobile game launch of 2023, raking in over $200 million a month.

Adapted from the browser version originally designed for Facebook, Candy Crush Saga is the hugely popular mobile-friendly version. It received 2.7 billion downloads in the five years after its release and reached $20 billion in revenue as of last September.

Amazon started as a place to buy cheap books online but quickly became the go-to place for all kinds of goods. It has 98 million active users but is now receiving a lot of competition from similar shopping apps that offer more competitive pricing.
