10 Superheroes Who Have Gone Bad Before & 10 Who Will Always Be Undeniably Good

The Broken Vs. The Unbreakable

The mask slips, the cape frays, and the shield cracks. Every superhero faces moments that test their moral compass, and comic creators have explored both sides of heroism—heroes who were once bad and those unbreakable spirits who will always stay true. Let's first meet the ones who allowed evil to overcome them in one way or another before moving on to the superheroes you can always count on to do the right thing.

1. Archangel

Apparently, Warren Worthington III's transformation began with tragedy. During the Mutant Massacre, his wings were damaged beyond repair, driving him to attempt suicide. Apocalypse saved him with techno-organic wings and a new persona: Death, Apocalypse's horseman. Additionally, his struggle with dual personalities culminated in the Dark Angel Saga.

2. Cyclops

The Phoenix Force changed everything for Scott Summers. Once Xavier's model student, Cyclops took a dark path after becoming its host during Avengers vs. X-Men. With cosmic power corrupting him, he committed the unthinkable. He killed Professor X. Though Brian Bendis briefly wrote him toward redemption, post-Secret Wars saw Cyclops as a villain.

3. Green Lantern

It was the destruction of Coast City in 1994 that sent Hal Jordan spiraling into madness. Taking the name Parallax, he launched a devastating attack on the Green Lantern Corps. Ten years later, Geoff Johns offered redemption by revealing that the Parallax entity had been possessing and manipulating Hal all along.

4. Iron Man

Tony Stark secretly betrayed the Avengers in the bizarre '90s storyline The Crossing. Working as Kang the Conqueror's agent for years, Iron Man turned against his teammates in a convoluted plot. Marvel's solution? The Avengers traveled back in time to recruit teenage Tony to fight his future self.

5. Jean Grey

The Dark Phoenix Saga remains one of comics' most iconic storylines. Manipulated by Mastermind, Jean Grey's Phoenix persona took over darkness and consumed an entire star system. Editor Jim Shooter insisted there was no coming back from genocide, which led to her dramatic death.

6. Professor X

This is what happens when the world's most powerful telepath turns evil. After wiping Magneto's mind during Fatal Attractions, a fragment of Magneto's consciousness merged with Xavier's darkest aspects. This psychic entity, Onslaught, nearly destroyed the Marvel Universe. The final confrontation required the sacrifice of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.

7. Reed Richards

Arrogance and genius often make a dangerous combination. While the mainstream Marvel Universe's Reed Richards occasionally flirts with darkness, his Ultimate Universe counterpart took over villainy. Known as The Maker, this twisted Reed Richards became his reality's greatest threat before transferring to the main Marvel Universe during Secret Wars

8. Scarlet Witch

"No more mutants." With those three words, Wanda Maximoff nearly extinguished the mutant race. Brian Bendis used her mental breakdown to reshape Marvel in Avengers Disassembled and House of M. The X-Men faced extinction following her reality-altering powers going haywire. Marvel eventually redeemed her in Avengers: Children's Crusade.

9. Superman/Supergirl

Red Kryptonite turns Krypton's last son and daughter into their worst selves. Superman and Supergirl—typically paragons of virtue—become easy villains when exposed to this crimson mineral. This plot device was featured mainly in Superman III and the Supergirl episode "Falling," which paid homage to its cinematic predecessor.

10. Wolverine

Mark Millar began his Wolverine run by killing Logan at the hands of Gorgon, whose presence nullified mutant powers. Logan's story didn't end there. The Hand resurrected him as their agent, turning the best at what he does against his superhero allies. Logan soon launched a brutal revenge campaign against his masters.

While some heroes stumble into villainy through cosmic corruption or manipulation, others stand as beacons that never dim. Let's look at the other side.

1. Superman

Truth, justice, and the American way aren't just catchphrases for Kal-El. Ever since his debut in Action Comics #1, Superman has remained a beacon of hope despite countless opportunities to hop on to darkness. Even when storylines like Injustice show evil alternates, the core Superman consistently chooses compassion.

2. Spider-Man

With great power comes great responsibility. Peter Parker lives by these words after losing Uncle Ben, making constant sacrifices for others. From rejecting the alien symbiote to giving up his marriage to save Aunt May, Spider-Man's moral compass has stayed steady across six decades of comics.

3. Wonder Woman

Have you ever wondered what makes an Amazon princess leave paradise? Diana's commitment to peace brought her to our world as an ambassador and warrior. Designed by William Moulton Marston in 1941, Wonder Woman follows truth and compassion rather than merely defeating enemies.

4. Captain America

Frozen in ice since WWII, Steve Rogers awoke in a world he barely recognized, but he never wavered from his principles. The super-soldier serum enhanced his body, but his moral strength was always there. Even when the entire Marvel Universe questioned freedom versus in Civil War, Cap stood firm for individual liberty.

5. The Flash

Barry Allen's optimism runs as fast as his feet. Connected to the Speed Force that powers all speedsters, the forensic scientist turned superhero sacrifices himself for others. 6. Black Panther

T'Challa first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 and made history as the first Black superhero in mainstream comics. He's got tech skills that rival Iron Man's and a strategic mind on par with Captain America. What sets him apart is his strong love for his home country.

7. Daredevil

Hell's Kitchen's guardian fights injustice in and out of costume. Matt Murdock, blinded as a kid by radioactive waste, uses his senses as both an attorney and vigilante. Frank Miller's legendary run could even have pushed Daredevil toward darkness permanently, but his Catholic faith and moral conviction stopped him.

8. Ms. Marvel

Representation matters deeply in superhero narratives, so let's talk about Ms. Marvel. A Pakistani-American teenager with shape-shifting powers, this heroine carries the joy of heroism while tackling cultural identity. Her enthusiasm and positivity have made her an instant classic character who always picks compassion over convenience.

9. Nightwing

From Boy Wonder to an independent hero, Grayson's evolution represents growth without moral compromise. Batman taught him justice, but Nightwing added compassion, which his mentor often lacked. His leadership of the Teen Titans and later the Titans showcases his ability to inspire rather than intimidate.

10. Storm

Who controls the weather? Ororo Munroe wields atmospheric powers matched only by her moral authority. Worshipped as a goddess in Kenya before joining the X-Men, Storm maintained her dignity even when depowered. Her marriage to Black Panther united two of comics' most prominent Black heroes.
