Forget scary movies, horror games dig their claws deep into our psyches! They make us jump, scream, and sometimes throw controllers across the room. Yet we keep coming back for more. The following masterpieces represent the best heart-pounding experiences gaming has to offer—and it's only right that you take the time to experience each of them at least once in your life. So, how many of these have you tried before?
The Last of Us Part 1 Review by IGN
1. Resident Evil (1996)
What began as Capcom's ambitious experiment eventually redefined an entire genre. Players step into the shoes of either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine, members of an elite task force trapped in a mansion crawling with the undead. The game's fixed camera angles and limited resources create an atmosphere of genuine dread.

2. Silent Hill 2 (2001)
The psychological trauma experienced by protagonist James Sunderland forms the backbone of what many consider horror gaming's finest hour. Unlike its contemporaries, this masterpiece from Team Silent eschews cheap jump scares in favor of existential dread and disturbing symbolism. The fog-shrouded town becomes a manifestation of guilt and repression.
3. Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010)
Frictional Games revolutionized horror by removing the player's ability to fight back. With no weapons at your disposal, tackling Castle Brennenburg becomes an exercise in managing your sanity meter and growing sense of helplessness. It is said that the game sold over a million copies despite its indie origins.
4. Dead Space (2008)
Those grotesque Necromorphs that stalk the corridors of the USG Ishimura must be dismembered limb by limb to be stopped. Visceral Games made a sci-fi horror experience that brilliantly uses its HUD as part of the game world. Plus, we find protagonist Isaac Clarke's health displayed on his engineering suit.

5. Outlast (2013)
Mount Massive Asylum houses some of gaming's most disturbing imagery, captured through the night vision of your increasingly damaged camcorder. The game's unflinching approach to violence and religious themes sparked controversy. Inspired by real-life asylums, its story unfolds through documents, tapes, and environmental storytelling.

6. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly (2003)
Twin sisters Mio and Mayu stumble upon an abandoned village frozen at the moment of a failed ritual sacrifice. The game's signature Camera Obscura mechanic turns photography into a weapon against the supernatural, requiring players to face terrors head-on rather than flee. Apparently, Director Kikuchi was inspired by Japanese folklore.
7. The Last of Us (2013)
Naughty Dog's emotional journey across a fungal-ravaged America blends stealth, survival, and storytelling in unprecedented ways. The relationship between Joel and Ellie grows against a backdrop of breathtaking devastation, where humans often prove more monstrous than the infected. The Last of Us (2013) garnered over 200 Game of the Year awards.

8. Alien: Isolation (2014)
The AI programming behind the Xenomorph hunting you aboard Sevastopol Station uses a dual-sensory system. Creative Assembly spent years studying Ridley Scott's original film, recreating its retro-futuristic aesthetic down to the analog technology and CRT monitors. Amanda Ripley's search for her mother becomes a 20+ hour exercise in constant tension.

9. System Shock 2 (1999)
Here, we meet one of gaming's greatest villains: the rogue AI SHODAN. Irrational Games mixed RPG progression with resource scarcity in ways that influenced countless titles, including their later BioShock series. You wake up on the abandoned Von Braun spaceship, only to find it overrun by mutants, rogue AIs, and horror.

10. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (2002)
Developer Silicon Knights crafted a Lovecraftian narrative involving ancient beings and cosmic horror. This GameCube exclusive spans 2000 years of horror across multiple playable characters and civilizations. Its patented "Sanity Effects" system directly interferes with the player's experience, simulating everything from volume changes to false crash screens.
11. Condemned: Criminal Origins (2005)
The brutal melee combat system forces FBI agent Ethan Thomas into uncomfortably close encounters with Metropolitan City's homicidal vagrants. Note that firearms are scarce here. So, you are bound to rely on pipes, axes, and bats for brutal close-quarters fights. It all takes place in abandoned buildings, subway tunnels, etc.

12. The Evil Within (2014)
Well-known director Shinji Mikami returned to survival horror with this nightmare that constantly shifts its environments and rules. The game's disturbing creature designs include iconic horrors like The Keeper, a humanoid figure with a safe for a head. Also, we have Laura, a multi-limbed woman created from the protagonist's guilt.

13. Bloodborne (2015)
The city of Yharnam's architecture draws from real-world locations like Prague and Edinburgh. Players gradually discover an entire mythology involving ancient blood, celestial beings, and parallel dimensions. Interestingly, much of the richest lore is hidden in item descriptions and environmental details that reward observant hunters.

14. F.E.A.R. (2005)
The revolutionary enemy AI created by Monolith made the game's paramilitary opponents genuinely unpredictable. They flanked and coordinated in ways that felt human. Alma, the supernatural antagonist whose appearance was inspired by Japanese horror films like Ring, appears in fleeting glimpses that build tension between intense firefights.

15. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow Of Chernobyl (2007)
Ukrainian developer GSC Game World incorporated actual photographs and measurements from the actual Chernobyl disaster site to make an eerily authentic setting. The game's A-Life ecosystem simulates a living world where creatures and NPCs continue their routines regardless of player presence. Strange anomalies distort reality.

16. Parasite Eve (1998)
In this game, protagonist Aya Brea uses her unique mitochondrial powers against Eve, an entity seeking to replace humans with a new species. The game's scientific premise was based on endosymbiotic theory and the actual novel by Hideaki Sena, giving its biological horror an unusual grounding in real science.

17. The Mortuary Assistant (2022)
That detailed simulation at The Mortuary Assistant’s core requires players to perform literal mortician procedures while supernatural events escalate. A dynamic demon system makes sure that no two playthroughs are identical, with the entity adapting its tactics. Quickly identify which corpse is possessed before it fully takes over!

18. Cry Of Fear (2012)
Beginning as a Half-Life mod before becoming a standalone release, this psychological horror creation came into existence from a small team led by teenage developers. The game tackles mental health issues, including depression and suicidal ideation, through its protagonist, Simon. Despite its humble origins, it has impressive mechanics like co-op gameplay.

19. Anatomy (2016)
Anatomy uses cassette tapes scattered throughout a house to deliver an unsettling metaphorical narrative comparing homes to human bodies. Its low-fidelity graphics and degradation of the environment across multiple playthroughs bring an unsettling aesthetic. This has influenced the analog horror movement, proving that technical limitations can become artistic strengths.

20. The Beast Inside (2019)
With dual Protagonists and time Periods, you can play Adam, a CIA cryptanalyst in the 1970s, and Nicolas, a 19th-century man haunted by dark forces. Their stories connect in unexpected ways. Developed by Illusion Ray, it is driven by Unreal Engine 4 and is an excellent mix of paranormal horror and conspiracies.
