Starcraft 2 Strategy: 4 Tips For New Players

Starcraft 2: Wings of LibertyStarcraft 2 is a fun game, but it can have quite a big learning curve for new players. In this article you will find tips that will help you to be a better Starcraft 2 player, whether you are new to the Starcraft games, or new to the whole real time strategy genre.

Scout Early And Often

One thing many new players fail to do is to scout their opponent. It is invaluable to know whether your opponent is massing a large number of Tier 1 units, going for a fast expansion, or quickly climbing the tech tree. Starcraft 2 is balanced as a “rock, paper, scissors” game, meaning every unit is good against some of the others, but is very weak against a few certain units.

Most players send their 10th worker to scout out their opponent. This is a good time to see if your opponent is going for a quick rush or fast expansion. Your opponent will kill your scout as soon as he gets his first offensive unit out, so just take a quick look and get out. You can park your scout at your opponent’s natural expansion spot if you suspect that he will try to expand early, or you can have your scout go to one of the Xel’Naga towers in the middle of the map so you can see when your opponent is moving toward your base to attack.

Learn The Hotkeys

There is a hotkey for every action you can take, and you will need to take the time to learn them if you want to become a better player. Using hotkeys is much quicker than clicking on everything, especially in the heat of battle. Each race’s hotkeys are different, so it is best to pick one race and learn all of the hotkeys for that particular race.

Build Your Economy

Another thing many new players do not do is to build enough workers. You want to aim for a minimum of 2-3 workers per mineral patch and 3 workers per gas. You should constantly be making workers until it becomes a habit to make enough, and after a while you will get a feel for when you have made enough. You can always move some of your excess workers to a new expansion to get it up and running more quickly. This tip is especially important to follow if your opponent is harassing your economy by killing your workers.

Spend Your Resources

Using the first three tips will put you in a much better position in your matches, but it is very important to implement this final tip. You need to spend your minerals and gas as much as possible, instead of letting them build up into the thousands. You should have your production buildings constantly pumping out units. If they are queued to full, then build some more buildings so that you can be spending your excess resources. Many games are lost solely because the losing person did not build enough units and was overwhelmed.

By implementing these tips, you should notice definite improvements in your game. The important thing to remember is to keep learning and trying to improve.
