Starcraft 2 Beta New Unit Spotlight: Protoss Sentry – Tactics

Protoss Sentries Attacking In Starcraft 2In my previous article, I went over the basics of the new Protoss Sentry in Starcraft 2. In this article I will be taking a look at the different tactics you can use with the Sentry’s Force Field, Guardian Shield, and Hallucination abilities to help you win more battles.

Using Force Field Offensively

Protoss Sentry Using Force Field In Starcraft 2The Force Field ability can be used several different ways when making an offensive push. The most common usage is to use multiple Force Fields to divide up an opponent’s army, so that you can easily dispatch a few of them at a time.

Another good use is to trap the enemy with Force Fields by blocking any chance of retreat. This is especially nasty against your opponent’s workers, as they can’t do enough damage to defend themselves.

In 2v2 matches you can trap one of your opponents in his base by casting Force Field on his ramp, while you and your partner attack his teammate.

Using Force Field Defensively

Protoss Sentry Force Fields Blocking A Ramp In Starcraft 2Force Fields can be used very effectively when defending, as well. You can use them to block your ramp or any other choke-point to hold off early ground rushes.

Force Fields can also be used to divide an attacking enemy force, letting you defend against a much larger army by breaking it into more manageable chunks.

You can also use Force Fields to escape from the enemy in the open field when you are hopelessly outnumbered. This can buy you some time to make more reinforcements.

Guardian Shield

Protoss Sentry Using Guardian Shield In Starcraft 2The Guardian Shield ability should be used every time you face lots of ranged enemies, as it can reduce a considerable portion of the damage that your units would take. It can often be the difference between winning and losing, especially when you are facing enemy units with low damage per shot, like Marines.

For example, the Guardian Shield reduces the Marine’s damage from 6 to 4, which is a pretty hefty 33% reduction. If you add in some armor upgrades from the Forge, you could almost completely nullify damage taken from Marines.

Hallucination

Hallucinated Colossi In Starcraft 2Once you research the Hallucination ability at the Cybernetics Core, you can use Hallucinations in several different ways. A popular tactic is to Hallucinate a Phoenix and fly it over to your opponent’s base to quickly scout what he is building. You can take this even further by sending several flying unit Hallucinations over to your opponent’s base to make him think you are going heavy air, so then he will build units that counter air units. You can then roll in with your heavy ground force and dominate your opponent.

Another tactic you can use is to Hallucinate lots of large units, like the Colossus, to draw enemy fire while your real units wreck the enemy forces. This can even make some opponents quit instantly when they see your forces, thinking they have no chance.

The Power Of The Sentry

As you can see, the Sentry is a very powerful and valuable addition to the Protoss army. If you haven’t been using them to their full potential when playing Protoss, you should really explore the possibilities to see how they can help you to win.
