Starcraft 2 Beta New Protoss Unit Spotlight: Warp Prism

Protoss Warp Prism in Transport Mode in Starcraft 2The Protoss Warp Prism is a new flying transport unit making its debut in Starcraft 2. It is an upgraded version of the Shuttle from the first Starcraft, possessing a new ability to act as a Pylon in addition to its transporting capability.

The Basics

The Warp Prism is built at the Robotics Facility, for a cost of 200 minerals and 2 psi. Classified as an Armored Mechanical unit, the Warp Prism has 100 hit points, 40 shields, 0 armor, and a Move Speed of Normal.

Protoss Warp Prism in Phase Mode in Starcraft 2While it is in its Transport Mode, the Warp Prism can transport units like the Shuttle in the first game. The new mechanic added in this game, which differentiates the Warp Prism from the Shuttle, is the Phase Mode. When changed into this mode, the Warp Prism acts like a Pylon with a smaller radius. This lets it act as an emergency pylon if your enemy destroyed the pylons by your buildings. It can also be used to build structures to make a quick forward base, or in conjunction with Warp Gates to warp in reinforcements.

Available Upgrades For The Warp Prism

At the Robotics Bay, you can research the Gravitic Drive upgrade to increase the Warp Prism’s movement speed. This indirectly helps the Warp Prism’s survivability by letting it get in and out of your opponent’s base faster, leaving less time for your opponent to intercept and stop your drop tactic.

At the Cybernetics Core, you can research 3 levels of Air Armor to add 1 armor per upgrade. At the Forge, you can research 3 levels of the Plasma Shields upgrade to add 1 armor to the Warp Prism’s shields per upgrade.

Best Uses Of The Protoss Warp Prism

The Warp Prism can be a key part of a successful strategy, as long as your opponent does not see it or if you have it well protected. If possible, you should send some air unit support along with your Warp Prisms if you are planning on dropping units in your opponent’s base. As an alternative, you can also send a small ground force as a distraction to attack the front part of your opponent’s base, and then execute your drop at the back of his base.

The Warp Prism’s ability to not only transport your troops, but also warp in additional Gateway units, makes it a very valuable part of a Protoss army. It makes the tactic of dropping units into your enemy base very deadly, and if you warp in enough extra units, can end the game right then and there.
