A Look At The 9 Marvel Characters That Have Been Announced For Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is projected to release in the Spring of 2011 for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. So far, 9 Marvel characters have been announced for the next installment of this popular fighting game series. They are well-known favorites for the most part, except for two somewhat obscure villains. Here is a look at all of the Marvel characters that have been announced.

Captain America

A character that has always been somewhat popular, Captain America will be seeing a large surge of popularity once the Captain America: The First Avenger movie comes out in 2011.

Deadpool

Deadpool’s popularity has been steadily growing over the years, and is likely now at an all-time high with the announcement of a Deadpool movie in 2012. After getting to play as him in the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance series, fans of the “Merc with a Mouth” will finally get a chance to use him in a fighting game.

Doctor Doom

The archenemy of the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom makes his second consecutive appearance in the Marvel Vs. Capcom series. Interestingly, none of the Fantastic Four have ever been playable characters in the Marvel Vs. Capcom series, and this trend will continue in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Perhaps the developers feel that each Fantastic Four member is too weak and one-dimensional on their own to warrant their inclusion. Fantastic Four fans can take a little solace in the fact that each member’s power will be usable by one of the new playable characters, as you will find out later in the article.

Dormammu

This choice was puzzling to me. Dormammu is an obscure villain that mostly appeared in Dr. Strange comics. I just do not understand why they would pick a character that many people have never even heard of when there are so many popular characters in the Marvel Universe. There were some obscure characters in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, but there were also 56 playable characters, as opposed to the 30 that are planned for this game.

Hulk

The Hulk is pretty much a lock to be included in any Marvel game, and not surprisingly, was one of the first six playable characters announced.

Iron Man

Iron Man’s popularity has skyrocketed after two successful movies, thus making him an obvious choice to return after his first appearance in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2.

Super-Skrull

The second Fantastic Four villain to be announced, Super-Skrull has the powers of all four members of the Fantastic Four. In light of this, including any members of the Fantastic Four in the game as playable characters would be silly (and redundant), although they still may appear in cameo roles.

Thor

With a Thor movie due to be released in 2011, it was inevitable that Thor would appear in this game.

Wolverine

Wolverine, the most popular mutant in Marvel history, is obviously going to be in any Marvel fighting game. I can only imagine what the reaction would have been from the legions of Wolverine fans if the developers had said that he would not be in the game.

But Wait, There’s More!

There are still at least 6 more Marvel characters to be announced. The only Marvel character left that is certain to be included is Spider-Man. The rest are anybody’s guess, although I still think Venom, Gambit, and Magneto have very good chances of making the cut. I’m sure that there will also be a few more surprise picks like Dormammu that no one saw coming.
